Water is a special liquid which is actually lighter (less dense) when it is in solid state. For most objects, their solid state is heavier (denser) than liquid.
For a solid to be floating on its liquid state, it means the solid has a lower density. It also means that ice has higher volume than water, at about 8.6% more than the volume of water.
The mass of ice remains the same as water. Only volume increases.
But remember this only applies on water and very few other objects. Most objects become heavier (denser) when they become solid. In those cases, their volume decreases.
As for metallic containers called thermo flask. Thermo flask keeps water or food warm as it has a thin lining of air in between two pieces of steel. Some even has vacuum (space without air) in between. Air is a bad conductor of heat, so thermo flask can keep things both warm and cold in it.
So this is what Mr Wan wrote about the volumes of ice and water. Just FYI
