Use guess-and-check also known as listing
Start with boys sold $25 worth of tickets and girls sold $15 worth of tickets
Check with 12 boys and 12 girls.
Every increase of 1 girl and decrease of 1 boy results in $10 difference.
So you'll eventually reach 10 boys and 14 girls.
Those using algebra will have this solution:
Let x be number of boys and y be number of girls
x + y = 24
so x = 24 - y
$25x - $15y = $40 (remove $ sign)
so, 25 times (24-y) - 15y = 40
600 - 25y - 15y = 40
40y = 560
y = 14
so x = 10
10 boys, 14 girls
